Batch cooking sounds efficient and usually ends in a kitchen that looks like a crime scene. What is missing is an order of work. AI can write you a timeline — oven first, grains second, sauces while they cook — so an hour really is an hour.

  1. 1

Pick two bases and two toppings

A grain, a protein, a tray of vegetables and a sauce cover a week of lunches.

  2. 2

    Say what equipment you have

One oven, two rings, a rice cooker. The plan depends on it.

Why one hour changes the week

Lunch is the meal most people leave to chance. By noon you are hungry, short of time and choosing between an expensive sandwich and whatever is nearest. Cooking five lunches in one go removes that decision for the whole working week. It also costs noticeably less than buying lunch each day and usually tastes better by Thursday than a meal deal does.

The reason people give up on batch cooking is that they try to make five different dishes, or one dish five times. The first takes all afternoon. The second is unbearable by Wednesday. The method here sits in between: a few components, cooked together and combined differently each day.

The idea in one paragraph

Pick two bases, two proteins or hearty toppings and two sauces or dressings. Cook the bases and toppings at the same time, using the oven and the hob together. Store everything separately. Each morning, or the night before, put a box together: one base, one topping, one sauce and something fresh. Six components give you more combinations than there are working days.
