A CV works when it answers the advert in front of it. AI is good at spotting which of your experiences match what the employer asks for and at tightening the wording. It must not invent anything: the rule is your facts, better phrased.

  1. 1

    Paste the job advert

Ask for the five things the employer cares about most.

  2. 2

    Paste your current CV

Leave out your address and phone number. Ask which parts are relevant and which are noise.

Why one CV does not fit all jobs

A recruiter reading applications spends very little time on each one at first. In that time they are looking for a match between what the advert asks for and what the page in front of them shows. A general CV, sent to twenty different jobs, makes them hunt for that match. A CV tailored to the advert puts it in the top third of the first page. The experience is the same. Only the order, the emphasis and the wording change, and those are what decide whether you are invited to talk.

Tailoring by hand for every application is slow, which is why most people do not do it. With AI it takes a quarter of an hour.

The honest rule

Tailoring means choosing which true things to put first and describing them in the employer’s language. It does not mean adding skills you lack, inflating job titles or inventing results. AI will sometimes offer to “strengthen” a CV by adding things that are not in it. Do not accept that. Apart from being dishonest, it fails in practice: interviews are designed to probe exactly those claims, and reference checks follow.

  • Reorder: put the most relevant experience and skills where they are seen first.
  • Rephrase: use the words the advert uses for things you really did.
  • Quantify: add numbers you already have, such as team size, budget, volume or time saved.
  • Cut: remove what is irrelevant to this job. A shorter, focused CV beats a complete one.
